How are disputes between patients and healthcare providers handled in Singapore's legal system?

Disputes between patients and healthcare providers in Singapore can be handled through several channels. Patients can file a lawsuit in civil court for compensation for any injury or harm caused by the healthcare provider’s negligence.

Medical Negligence & Medical Malpractice Lawsuits

Alternatively, patients can also seek mediation or arbitration through Singapore Mediation Centre or Singapore Medical Council to resolve the dispute before proceeding to court. In mediation and arbitration, both parties are given a chance to present their case, and a neutral third party helps find a mutually acceptable solution.

Medical Negligence Case Terri Schiavo

Terri Schiavo was hospitalized in 1990 when she experienced a cardiac attack, which led to brain damage. In 2005, after years of her husband and her parents engaging in contentious court fights against one other, she had her life support turned off.

The case triggered a discussion about medical decision-making at the end of life and end-of-life care across the country, in addition to a discussion about the role of the courts in such circumstances. Additionally, significant concerns regarding the right to life and the right to death were raised as a result of this case.
