The UK’s medical community was jolted by the case of breast surgeon Ian Paterson. He was found guilty of executing needless and hazardous procedures on his patients, including mastectomies on noncancerous patients.
Paterson worked for both the National Health Service (NHS) and private institutions. Additionally, it was revealed that he operated on patients without getting their formal approval.
Many of Paterson’s ex-clients who suffered acute psychological and physical distress as a result of his conduct brought the charges against him. The scandal also sparked a government review into how the NHS handled the situation, which led to a probe into the actions of other medical specialists.
In 2017, it was ruled that Paterson was indeed guilty and was given a sentence of 20 years in prison. The episode made clear the need for ameliorated oversight and regulation of medical professionals in order to put a halt to reoccurrences of this sort.
