Dennis Quaid’s Twins: In 2007, the actor Dennis Quaid’s twins were in the newborn critical care unit when they received an overdose of the blood thinner heparin. Consequently, they had severe bleeding complications. The twins were able to pull through, but the tragedy garnered widespread attention and resulted in a settlement of $75 million.
The incident, which was the consequence of a drug error, caused improvements in hospital processes and enhanced attention to patient safety. These changes were brought about as a direct result of the occurrence. In order to recompense the Quaid family for the harm that was inflicted upon their children and to assist in defraying the expense of their ongoing medical requirements, a settlement was granted to the family.
