The Act establishes stringent guidelines for organ donation and transplantation, including the need for written authorization from the organ donor and establishing a Central Organ Transplantation Office to oversee the procedure. In order to match donors with recipients, this office keeps a national waiting list of recipients. Furthermore, only authorized hospitals are allowed to obtain and perform organ transplants.

Diane Cahill: In 1997, Diane Cahill was given the incorrect diagnosis of a less dangerous ailment when, in reality, she was suffering from lung cancer. Because her disease was not adequately handled, she ultimately passed away as a result of its complications. Her family filed a lawsuit saying that her physicians committed medical negligence by failing to properly identify and treat her ailment.
The action was filed in a state court. In the complaint, it was alleged that her doctors had failed to investigate all of her symptoms, had not performed any essential diagnostic tests, and had not considered any other possibilities for the origins of her illnesses. The action ultimately resulted in a settlement of two million dollars, which was given to her family as compensation for the loss they had suffered.
